What Is a Life Settlement?
A life settlement is the sale of a life insurance policy to an institutional buyer for more than its cash surrender value and less than its death benefit: you get a lump sum, and the buyer takes over the premiums. In 2025 the average settlement paid sellers $212,066, nearly 9 times the $24,360 average cash surrender value, per the Life Insurance Settlement Association (LISA). Individual results vary.
Our guide to selling your life insurance policy covers payouts, buyers, and how it works, and the two-minute eligibility check tells you if you're likely to qualify.

Common Questions
Questions About Citizens Life Group
Is Citizens Life Group a buyer or a broker?
A broker. We represent you, the seller, and never buy policies ourselves. Providers buy policies for their own portfolios; a broker makes those buyers compete for yours. Our broker vs. provider guide explains the difference, and our review of life settlement companies shows how to vet anyone you talk to.
What does it cost to sell through Citizens Life Group?
Nothing out of pocket. The broker commission is paid from the settlement proceeds at closing, and every fee is disclosed in writing before you sign. Proceeds can have tax implications; our tax guide covers the basics, and a CPA can advise on your situation. More detail is in the FAQ.
Does Citizens Life Group handle viatical settlements?
Yes. When the insured is terminally or chronically ill, the sale is called a viatical settlement, and the same brokered, competitive process applies. See life settlement vs. viatical for how the two differ.
What types of policies does Citizens Life Group broker?
Universal life, whole life, survivorship, and convertible term policies can all qualify, including trust-owned policies where a trustee is the seller. We work with face values from $100K to $10M+.

Great guidance! I was able to get an offer for our survivorship life insurance policy way above what the carrier was offering as the cash out option. Highly recommended!
